The laws of the market have incurred the closing of industries in the

well as in Quebec.. What can we do as consumer and citizen
vis-à-vis this situation? Do we have to resign ourselves to buy
second hand products? The Quebec Coalition Against Sweatshops educates
the population on the reality of sweatshops, and alternatives to
sweatshops. They advocate, among other things, the creation of ethical
purchasing policies. A review of the Coalition's campaigns will give us

Madeleine Plouffe, Public Works and Government Services Canada.
Title:
How green is your organization? Online demonstration of the North
American Green Purchasing Initiative's Eco-SAT, the green purchasing
self-assessment tool.
Summary:
Madeleine Plouffe is responsible for the conception and development of
the Eco-SAT, a self-assessment tool for green purchasing of the North
American Green Purchasing Initiative. She was a procurement officer
for services within the federal government after graduating from the
University of Ottawa with a B.Com in marketing and international
management. Today she is the Outreach Strategies Officer for the
Office of Greening Government Operations of Public Works and
Government Services Canada.
How can your organization green its purchasing practices? How can it
turn these practices to environmentally responsible ones? What can you
do to help your organization in the process? How green is your
organization?
"Green" purchasing is a way of using our power as consumers to benefit
the environment-buying products that have lesser environmental
impacts. Governments, companies, universities, hospitals and other
institutions make purchasing decisions daily. Large organizations like
these can make a major contribution to improved human health and
environment when they put in place a Green Procurement policy,
mandating the purchasing of more "eco-friendly" products and services.
The Eco-SAT is designed to help professional purchasers evaluate their
organization's environmental purchasing initiatives and identify
opportunities for improvement.
Environmental purchasing is a set of policies, procedures and tools
that allow an organization to make the most efficient use of
materials, produce a minimum of waste and pollution, and to stimulate
the use of post-consumer material.
The Eco-SAT consists of a checklist and a corresponding Best Practices
Guide and can be used by any organization with a structured purchasing
system.
The Eco-SAT can be previewed from: www.cec.org/eco-sat
