Book Club meetings

Books are an important vector of promotion for best practices in corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.

That’s why Catalethique offers its members to meet on a regular basis to talk about a book they like. Members jointly choose a new book each 2 to 4 months.

Those meetings offer an opportunity to share experiences and points of view in a cordial and informal atmosphere. They take place in downtown Montreal , after office hours. Food and drink is sometimes served during the discussion. The course of the discussion is bilingual as well as the choice of the books.

The author or someone related to the subject of the book may be invited.

Please find below the 3 books that have been shortlisted for next book club meeting .

No Small Potatoes the nonfiction book by Elizabeth Johnston

Author : Elizabeth Johnston
Editor : Sound Proof Press( sep. 2008)
Number of pages : 156

ONLY AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH

Elizabeth Johnston is a long time Catalethique member.
After being awarded a Canada Council grant to write a book about the potato, she traveled to Prince Edward Island, Peru and Hungary for research and to interview people. Her fascination with the potato brings her on an absorbing journey through many of the pivotal issues affecting how we live today. The stark reality of GMO domination, leading to the destruction of agricultural communities, the limiting of food choice and the loss of traditional knowledge and farming practices is central to the book. She skillfully demonstrates how science has lost its integrity in response to the lure of big business but points out that there is hope for small scale farmers working to preserve genetic diversity and food security. Elizabeth’s account of how native Peruvians are reclaiming their dignity and spiritual connection to the land and her call for a grassroots movement for food independence make this a captivating read. When Mike Bowlin, Chairman of ARCO, said in 1999 that "We've embarked on the beginning of the last days of the age of oil," he was voicing a truth that many others in the petroleum industry knew but dared not utter. Over the past few years, evidence has mounted that global oil production is nearing its historic peak.

Oil has been the cheapest and most convenient energy resource ever discovered by humans. During the past two centuries, people in industrial nations accustomed themselves to a regime in which more fossil-fuel energy was available each year, and the global population grew quickly to take advantage of this energy windfall. Industrial nations also came to rely on an economic system built on the assumption that growth is normal and necessary, and that it can go on forever.

When oil production peaks, those assumptions will come crashing down.Read more
